Why use icons instead of text?

Icons can save space over text, but at the price of recognition. For small icons, such as 16x16 pixel, it's very difficult for users to even recognize what they are supposed to be a picture of, let alone what the picture is supposed to stand for. One user I know thought the “disk” icon for save was a picture of a TV.

What makes a good button?

Summary. A good button is one that is instinctive to your user — they know what it'll do and where they can find it. The beauty of a button is in its simplicity in function, placement and design. Keep the button text concise and make sure it has enough contrast to other UI elements on the page.

How do I make my buttons look more clickable?

Why raised buttons stands out more than flat buttons?

Raised buttons add dimension to mostly flat layouts. They emphasize functions on busy or wide spaces. Use raised buttons to give more prominence to actions in layouts with a lot of varying content.
