Most commonly, italics are used for emphasis or contrast — that is, to draw attention to some particular part of a text.

What is the purpose of italics? Italics are used primarily to denote titles and names of particular works or objects in order to allow that title or name to stand out from the surrounding sentence. Italics may also be used for emphasis in writing, but only rarely.
How do you emphasize a word already in italics?
Note: If a whole passage of text is already rendered in italics (such as a block quote) then you can emphasize a key word or phrase within it by rendering it as standard Roman (i.e. non-italicized) text.
How do you emphasize text without italics?
When writing with a type writer you can emphasize a word by underlining it, but it's also possible to space out the word to emphasize it. Underlining also works fine when you are writing with a pencil or a pen. The most common methods of emphasis, that do not utilise italics are CAPITALS and the use of bold letters.
