When to use save button?

It's to save your progress. Normally when your in the middle of doing one of the sections you may decide to come off the computer and do something else for a while well if you hit the submit button it will save your work but also provide you with an error “if you didn't complete the section”.

Where does save button go on form?

Right: 'save and exit' button next to the primary button (good). Sometimes users might need to save their progress on a long form. Putting the 'save and exit' button above the primary button implies it's more important, when it isn't.

Why is a Save button important?

Save buttons are common because of the common pattern learned by the users for decades. Load data or files from a persistent storage into main memory. Modify the data in main memory. Save the modified data back to a persistent storage.

Should primary button be on left or right?

Full page designs should have the primary button on the left side of the page. If the browser window is large, or you have to scroll down to fill out a form, it's best to have the primary button right below the last bit of content on the page.
