What is hyphenation InDesign?

Hyphenation settings in design programs, such as InDesign and Illustrator control how many letters occur before or after a hyphen. Hyphens help regulate word spacing by allowing for word breaks. I'll talk about the principles and the desired results of good word spacing, so you'll know what to look for.

Why would a typesetter or graphic design use hyphenation?

Hyphenation is a common occurrence in typography, especially in narrow columns of type. This “necessary evil” is used to create better looking, tighter rags in non-aligned margins, as well as to help achieve more even spacing in justified text. Hyphenation also allows more words to fit in a line.

Why is hyphenation not working in InDesign?

Presumably you have backup copies of your book file. You should regularly apply a Safe As to your InDesign document and incrementally rename the file (filename1a. indd, filename1b. indd and so on), this will clean up the crud that can build up and cause corruption.

What is hyphenation in typography?

Hyphenation is the act of using the hyphen character to either break single words over two lines, or connect multiple words. The former is the job of the typographer (usually aided by automatic tools built into design software or browsers); the latter is the job of the writer or editor.
