If height: auto; the element will automatically adjust its height to allow its content to be displayed correctly. If height is set to a numeric value (like pixels, (r)em, percentages) then if the content does not fit within the specified height, it will overflow.
Why percentage is not working for height?
You can't base a percentage height on a parent that has no height set otherwise the height should default to auto (content doesn't count as height either). Also you can't base a child's percentage height on a parent that has min or max height set either as it must be a real height.
