Help text provides either an informative description or an error message that gives more context about what a user needs to input. It's commonly used in forms.

Use succinct, short, descriptive labels (a word or two) so that users can quickly scan your form. Previous versions of Amazon's registration form contained a lot of words, which resulted in slow completion rates. The current version is much better and has short labels. Minimize the number of words in labels.
