What determines a country code?
The world was divided into nine zones, and countries were given one, two or three-digit country codes, with the initial digit representing their zone. World Zone 1 was North America, Zone 2 was Africa, Europe bagged both 3 and 4 because of the sheer number of larger countries, and so on.
Why is US country code 1?
The countries that were most influential in the telecommunications union, combined with those who had the largest population, were given the shortest and thus the simplest codes to enter. Therefore, it may not be surprising that the US and Canada received the single-digit country code +1.
Who set country code?
How are country code elements assigned? Following notification from the United Nations (UN), the ISO 3166 Maintenance Agency assigns alpha-2 and alpha-3 country code elements to new UN member states. The numeric country code is assigned by the UN.
Why do the US and Canada share a country code?
Canada is situated in North America and comes under the North American Numbering Plan (NANP). Since all NANP countries have the same country code, "1", you may call from the US to Canada by dialing 1 before the desired number.
