How do you look busy at work when there is nothing to do?
Scatter work materials around your desk.
Set out binders and open them to project pages. Leave a few documents that look like what you should be doing. Don't bring things from home that don't look like work. Use old projects or make some decoy documents that look like what you'd be working on.
How do I look busy typing?
If you're at home with a laptop then try sitting with your back to a wall. That way no one can see what you're doing. Do a lot of typing that looks productive. Make sure that even if you aren't doing much work, have something that looks like work open, such as an end of quarter PowerPoint or something of the sort.

Pretend to move around the office or room.
You can also move around the room or even an office. Try going over to the copier, for instance, and pretending to punch buttons. You can also pretend to look for something, such as trying to find your shoes in your house.
Why do people pretend to be busy?
Often the pantomime of 'mad, crazy, busy' is a tactic under-performers use to prevent anyone from asking them what they're actually doing. Most of us are simply pretending to be busy, in order to mask how completely dispensable we know we are.
