What are the characteristics of a good filter?
An ideal filter has a gain of one (0 dB) in the passband so the amplitude of the signal neither increases nor decreases. The stopband of the filter is the range of frequencies that the filter attenuates. The following figure shows the passband (PB) and the stopband (SB) for each filter type.

Passive and Active Filters
Filters can be placed in one of two categories: passive or active. Passive filters include only passive components—resistors, capacitors, and inductors. In contrast, active filters use active components, such as op-amps, in addition to resistors and capacitors, but not inductors.
