When would you need to crop an image?
Cropping can be used to make an image smaller (in pixels) and/or to change the aspect ration (length to width) of the image. Photographers have historically cropped images to direct the viewer's eye to a particular subset of a larger image.

Cropping is one of the most basic photo manipulation processes, and it is carried out to remove an unwanted object or irrelevant noise from the periphery of a photograph, to change its aspect ratio, or to improve the overall composition.

The first and most obvious reason to crop an image is to remove any unwanted background in the original. There may be an untidy background, details you don't want to be seen, or people you don't want in the picture.
