Can you learn multiple keyboard layouts?
But if you're interested in learning a new keyboard layout like Dvorak or Colemak and want to repeat my experiment of learning it while staying competent in both QWERTY and Dvorak, research says it's doable, as long as you stay in practice.
Should I learn QWERTY or Colemak?
Colemak users have recorded typing speeds of over 150 words per minute, some even 200, whereas most QWERTY typists manage to cross 100 words per minute speeds. The other benefits include lesser finger and wrist pain, since your fingers don't move much between key strokes, or up and down the keyboard.
How long does it take to learn a new keyboard layout?
Realistically, expect it to take at least a couple months of daily typing practice. Switching to a new layout is a large undertaking. It took me a few months to get to 50 wpm on Dvorak and about a year to get back to my former QWERTY speed of 80 wpm.
