What are application settings?

Application settings enable you to store application information dynamically. Settings allow you to store information on the client computer that shouldn't be included in the application code (for example a connection string), user preferences, and other information you need at runtime.

Is settings the same as configuration?

Settings plural and configuration are essentially synonymous. Configuration implies a standard group of settings, but is not always the case.

What is preference setting?

A preference set is a container of various preference settings declaringthe choices, desires, course of actions, or customizations per actor, group,or scope. A preference set captures the related properties for somefunctional area.
