Everybody working on the UX design of a product should have the personas in mind at every step of the process. It's naturally much easier to keep a persona in mind if the persona has a face, a name, and if some details about them are known.

How many personas should you have for UX design?
You should have roughly 3-5 personas and their identified characteristics. Make them realistic: Develop the appropriate descriptions of each personas background, motivations, and expectations. Do not include a lot of personal information. Be relevant and serious; humor is not appropriate.

Personas help designers to create understanding and empathy with the end users. Thanks to personas designers can: Gain a perspective similar to the user's. Creating personas can help designers step out of themselves and recognize that different people have different needs and expectations.
Are personas necessary?
The largest benefit of creating and having personas is a clear picture of specific user types that everybody can focus on and align around. Having specific user representations gets us away from designing for ourselves and disagreeing on what “the user” wants.
How many personas should you have?
Depending on your business, you could have as few as one or two personas, or as many as 10 or 20. It is generally recognized that 3-8 personas are sufficient in most cases. We've never encountered the need for more than seven personas or fewer than two for each business segment or product line, if they're diverse.
