Is area code and country code the same?
The country code is an identifier for a specific country. The area code directs calls to a broad region in the U.S. and Canada. The telephone prefix is a smaller area within that region.
Why is my phone asking for an area code?
The phone doesn't know which phone you're calling.. so many areas have implemented the requirement to dial area codes first, so phone calls are routed to the correct phone. The bigger the state, the more likely it is to require area code dialing… Otherwise that's a LOT of numbers that can't be used.
Why do we still use area codes?
These designated area codes helped automate telephone calls to anywhere across the country without the use of a human operator to connect you. Area codes helped redesign the antiquated phone system because there weren't enough human operators to fulfill the needs of the growing population.
