Why do UK traffic lights turn yellow before green?
They actually turn red-and-amber before green This is to give you time to notice the lights changing, get into gear, put your hand on the handbrake, and check whether it is safe to proceed. Pelican crossings are a bit different: they have a flashing amber phase between red and green.
