How to use ranked choice voting?
How does Ranked Choice Voting work? You can rank up to five candidates in order of preference, instead of choosing just one. If a candidate receives more than 50% of first-choice votes, they are the winner. If no candidate earns more than 50% of first-choice votes, then counting will continue in rounds.
How to tally rank choice voting?
We count each candidate's current vote total and then eliminate the candidates with no mathematical possibility of winning. This includes the candidate with the lowest number of first-choice rankings. We transfer votes from the eliminated candidates to the next-ranked candidate on those ballots.
What is ranked choice voting system?
The ranking allows the voter to determine how the vote is to be transferred if the first preference is found to be un-electable or if they are elected with surplus votes. IRV eliminates candidates in a series of rounds, emulating the effect of separate ballots on shrinking sets of candidates.
Which election has the highest voter turnout?
Voter turnout in United States presidential elections has historically been higher than the turnout for midterm elections.
