A single-site installation of WordPress includes five default user roles: Subscriber, Contributor, Author, Editor, and Administrator. Multisite WordPress installations require a sixth pre-made role, the Super Admin.

Roles provide a way for community administrators to group permissions and assign them to users or user groups. Permissions define the actions that a user can perform in a community. When they assign roles, community administrators consider the tasks of a user in the context of a particular community.
How do I give permission to users in WordPress?
Simply navigate to Members ยป Add New Role and then give your new role a name. In this case, we'll create a developer role that we can give to a WordPress developer with certain permissions granted. The left-hand column has different sections that have lists of available capabilities.
