The typical eye tracker is a dedicated piece of camera hardware designed and optimized for capturing eye movement in any lighting condition, and can compensate for head movement, and a wide range physiological variation of the eye region. Webcam eye tracking has none of these benefits.

How accurate is webcam eye tracking?
Webcam eye tracking has much lower accuracy than real eye trackers. While a typical remote eye tracker (e.g., Tobii T60) has accuracy of 0.5 degrees of visual angle, a webcam will produce accuracy of 2 - 5 degrees, provided that the participant is NOT MOVING.
