Alan Cooper writes in his book “About Face” that designers often say “user profile” interchangeably with “user persona,” but the two are very different. A profile is a high-level description of a user avatar. A persona is based on real users drawn directly from user research and observations of real people.

Persona Profiles are fictional characterizations drawn from real research data. They are not preconceived stereotypes; they are archetypes borne of careful study. Therefore, personas can serve as a powerful way to make your data meaningful.

Is one persona enough to create user profile?

For some companies, one persona is all they need to encompass all their customers. Others, especially enterprises, may need quite a few different ones. Multiple personas also allow you to tailor different campaigns to different segments. One persona may not be enough to represent all your customer groups!
