Why is Qwerty arranged the way it is?

The "qwerty" keyboard arrangement stems from mechanical typewriters. The keys are arranged to make fast typing difficult as old typewriters would easily jam. Of course humans being adaptable sorts have learned to overcome this obstructionist system and now (some folks) type faster than they talk, or even think.

Why is the keyboard in the shape that it is?

The Rectangle shape, shown in Figure 2, is very similar to the standard computer/typewriter keyboard shape. This shape was chosen to test the impact of familiarity, particularly within the different arrangements. This shape also featured high key compactness and screen density.

Keyboards were there in form of typewriters way before the actual digital gizmos came into existence, and due to mechanical constrains Typewriters were designed in rectangular shape and the trend has continued from there.

It's easier to reach all of the keys for one. Think of the typical position of y or b as examples. Also, it's just easier to move your fingers from the home row either straight up or straight down vs. at some angle which changes depending on your hand.
