Why are computer screens not square?
It is basically because when screens were CRT's it was easiest to make screens with a 1:1 ratio. We always new that wider is preferable to look at, hence cinema screens. So higher ratio rectangular screens for computers and TV's started with the move to LED's.
Why are books rectangle shaped?
The other factor for us humans, is that the majority of us need to be able to hold a book (or reading device) in our hands. This means that books have been optimised for the shape of our hands.
Why are screens rectangular and not square?
it requires data to be arranged in rows and columns. Thus a rectangular display is the most convenient shape to use all the area of the display, to map the data onto the screen. Early TV tubes were round partly because the large vacuum flask required is stronger in a circular shape.
Are computers square or rectangle?
Not all computer screens are rectangular. Some screens are square, like those with resolutions 1600 * 1200, or the old 4:3 aspect ratio. The earlier computer screens (and the television ones too) were squarish, with an aspect ratio of 4:3 (the letterbox format).
