What is a version 0?

Major version zero (0. y.z) is for initial development. Anything may change at any time. The public API should not be considered stable.

Why is version number important?

Commonly, software version numbers will help you differentiate between major and minor changes using a semantic numbering convention. Take a look at what version you're on and what version an update is.

Does versioning start at 0 or 1?

Incrementing a major version means you are breaking backward compatibility (at least according to SemVer), so you usually want to start with 0 - which is special because it means you don't guarantee backward compatibility just yet. And you set the minor version to 1 so that your release won't be 0.0.

How are version numbers determined?

The version number is increased by one digit, depending on the type of changes made in the new versioning. For example, software version 1.3. 1 means that the software is in its first major version, with three additional functionalities added, and one patch fix implemented.
