What are the differences between non-diegetic and diegetic UI components?
Non-diegetic interfaces may provide players with additional information about the game environment and their own status. Diegetic UI is defined as on-screen elements that are part of the game world and can be interacted with by the player.
What is a diegetic user interface?
Diegetic UI is UI made to look like it is entirely part of the game's narrative. It is something that the character would interact with in their world. If it exists in the physical space of the video game, and is something the character could interact with, it is considered Diegetic UI (Andrews, 2010).
What is non-diegetic UI?
Non-diegetic: Interface that is rendered outside the game world, only visible and audible to the players in the real world. Example: most classic heads-up display (HUD) elements. Spatial: UI elements presented in the game's 3D space with or without being an entity of the actual game world (diegetic or non-diegetic).
What is a meta UI?
Meta UI Elements are elements that are “(Not represented as a 3D model) within the [video game's] space yet still inhabit some form of narrative inside the game (Think of [it like] 2D overlays)” (Young, 2014).
