What do the different colored pins on Google Maps mean?
The color code shows you the speed of traffic on the road. Green: No traffic delays. Orange: Medium amount of traffic. Red: Traffic delays. The darker the red, the slower the speed of traffic on the road.

The Google Maps pin is the inverted-drop-shaped icon that marks locations in Google Maps. The pin is protected under a U.S. design patent as "teardrop-shaped marker icon including a shadow". Google has used the pin in various graphics, games, and promotional materials.
How do map pins work?
Either search for an address or scroll around the map until you find the location you want. Long-press on the screen to drop a pin. The address or location will pop up at the bottom of the screen. Tap on the location to share it, save it, add a label to it, or get directions.
