Typographic style
For best legibility, typographic manuals suggest that columns should be wide enough to contain roughly 60 characters per line. One formula suggests multiplying the point size of the font by 2 to reach how wide a column should be in picas — in effect a column width of 24 ems.
How wide should a paragraph be?
The optimal paragraph width is between 50-80 characters (including spaces) or 8-10 words per line. Obviously when determining this width you can take an average of several lines within the paragraph as the number of characters per line will vary depending on the paragraph alignment.
How wide should text be on website?
700 pixels wide is a good benchmark for text boxes with substantive text. We often mistakenly expand text boxes to very large sizes. A text box as wide as a 30-inch screen is less efficient for reading and site design than one that is 700 pixels (2.33 inches) in width.
How many characters wide should a paragraph be?
According to studies, the line length should not exceed 70 characters. So keep your paragraph width between 50 and 70 characters. So actually you should not care about the width in pixels, but rather the width in em s (The width relative to the font-size). So go for 30-50em.
