What is left to right reading called?
The direction of a writing system is called directionality. Writing systems that go from left to right are sometimes referred to as sinistrodextral, based on Latin roots for left (sinister) and right (dexter). Dextrosinistral is the reverse, right to left. There are many types of writing systems, also called a script.
Do you read top to bottom or left to right first?
Conformity and convention have ensured that we read and write from left to right and read from top to bottom. Hieroglyphs, the characters of the ancient Egyptian writing system, could be written in either direction; the animal and human shapes facing towards the start of the line showed you which way to read the text.
Why do we read top to bottom left to right?
A prevailing theory is that directionality was a mechanical consequence of the way languages were written. For instance, East Asian languages, which are often written top to bottom, were once written on scrolls. It would be easier for someone to write top to bottom with one hand holding the paper.
