Why am I getting weird symbols in Word?

It is one of the nonprinting marks in Word. You can hide these marks by clicking the ¶ icon on the Home tab. (If clicking ¶ doesn't help, click File > Options > Display and clear all individual options under "Always show these formatting marks on the screen.") Was this reply helpful?

Why is my Microsoft Word typing in symbols?

Tap Ctrl+Shift+8 or click the ¶ (i.e. pilcrow) button from the Home tab's Paragraph group to toggle the display of these on and off. A more complete solution are found by clicking the Office button, then Word options.
