Readability score

A readability score is a number that tells you how easy it will be for someone to read a particular piece of text. Grammarly's readability score is based on the average length of sentences and words in your document, using a formula known as the Flesch reading-ease test.

  1. Is 70 a good readability score?
  2. How is readability score measured?

Is 70 a good readability score?

The Flesch Reading Ease gives a text a score between 1 and 100, with 100 being the highest readability score. Scoring between 70 to 80 is equivalent to school grade level 8. This means text should be fairly easy for the average adult to read. The formula was developed in the 1940s by Rudolf Flesch.

How is readability score measured?

Readability refers to how easy it is to read and understand a text, depending on its unique features. This can be measured using metrics such as the number of syllables in a sentence or variety of words used to calculate a 'level' and/or a readability score.
