What is a widget term?
In computing, a widget is an element of a graphical user interface that displays information or provides a specific way for a user to interact with the operating system (OS) or an application.

A common widget example would be for your calendar app that will show you a view of your upcoming events and reminders without the need to open the app itself.
Why are they called widgets?
In the field of computing, the term widget first became popular when operating systems started supporting GUIs. It was used to refer to each element that would make up an application's GUI. A button, scroll bar, label, check box, panel or option button were all known as widgets.
What is widget and its types?
There are, in general, four types of widgets: information widgets, collection widgets, control widgets, and hybrid widgets. Although there are some other types, those are pretty uncommon, and usually serve a very specific – and uncommon – purpose for an app.
