1280px and 1920px are the two standard widths for web design. A 1280px website will look great on laptops and mobile devices but not so great on large monitors. To ensure your site looks just as good on big screens as it does on small screens, set your max site width to 1920px or more.

What is standard website width?

The optimal width is generally between 940px - 1000px width.

Some designers will set their design field wider (up to 1440px), but will place guides at 1000px so that content stops at that width. This width allows you to cater to the majority of devices that people are using and will still look nice on wider screens.

What is a good size for a website?

Ideally, you want to keep your HTML DOM page size to around 100 kb or less, depending on your niche. Pages could be larger in some niches; in ecommerce, for example, it's not uncommon to see pages around 150kb-200kb, depending on how many product images are on the page.

In the new window that appears in the bottom of your browser, move your mouse within the code until you see the content area highlighted (usually in blue). You'll notice a tooltip near the highlighting. The first number is the width.
